In 2015, the District invested in a modern 17 seat minibus to provide access to affordable transport for all Scout Groups in the area.
The aim of the District minibus is to increase the amount of adventure in the programme. For example, it can be used to take your young people out onto the Lincolnshire Wolds for a night hike, to go on a local visit, or to go further afield for an activity day.
The cost of hire is just 50p per mile, which includes fuel. This means that a local journey on your section meeting night would be affordable from weekly subs, compared with paying for a full day’s hire from a minibus hire company.
The minibus can of course also be used to take young people away on a residential experience, but we would also like to see it being used throughout the week to benefit the weekly programme by getting out and about the area.
Who can drive the minibus?
In order to drive the District minibus, you must have the D1 category on your driving licence and be on the list of authorised drivers. Anyone can register to become an authorised driver – leaders, helpers, parents, committee members, etc. There is no requirement for a driver to be a registered member of The Scout Association.
To register as an authorised driver, fully complete the Driver Registration Form and return it to the Minibus Coordinator by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
When submitting your registration form, you will need to supply a copy of both sides of your driving licence, and a one-off check code from www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence.
Please register your drivers in plenty of time; it can sometimes take a few days to complete the process, particularly if we have to contact our insurers about any convictions/accidents.
How do we book the minibus?
You can provisionally check availability of the minibus by viewing the booking calendar. To make a request for a booking, please email email@example.com. It is your responsibility to secure a driver for your hire.
How much does it cost?
The hire fee is a flat rate of 50p per mile, which includes fuel.
Should the bus not be cleaned to an acceptable standard after use (as determined by the Minibus Coordinator) a cleaning charge will be applied; this is currently £30.
If damage is caused to the minibus, an excess of £250 will be payable by the hiring Group (not driver) to cover the costs of our insurance excess.
Full terms and conditions can be found in the Minibus Hire Policy.
How many seats are there? Is there a tow bar?
There are 17 seats, including the driver’s seat. All seats are fitted with three point seat belts. There is a tow bar fitted, however, you may only tow a trailer if you have the necessary D1+E entitlement on your driving licence and seek permission from the Minibus Coordinator.
